Podcast Hosting Tool.Enterprise Podcast Platform. Two Different Products.
A podcast hosting tool stores your audio and publishes it to a public RSS feed for the open podcast apps. An enterprise podcast platform delivers audio to an authenticated internal audience inside the tools employees already use, with single sign-on, permissions, governance and reporting built for a company. Same medium, two different jobs. This page shows where the line sits.

When Is A Hosting ToolThe Right Choice?
Often. Hosting tools are good at what they were built for, they are inexpensive, and a public show does not need anything more. If the points below describe your project, stay where you are and spend the budget on production instead.
- The show is public, or you actively want it discoverable in Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
- The audience is customers, candidates or a market, not a named group of employees.
- One team owns the show, and nobody outside it needs publishing rights.
- Download counts are enough to report on, because nobody is asking who listened.
- No security review, works council consultation or data-processing agreement stands between you and publishing.
Our own pricing starts at a self-serve tier for exactly this reason: a first show should be cheap to try.
When Does A Hosting ToolStop Working?
Four situations account for almost every migration we see. None of them is a fault in the hosting tool; they are simply outside what it was designed to do.
The audience has to stay private
The moment an episode contains figures, restructuring news or customer names, a public feed is the wrong container. Password-protected feeds and unlisted links are shareable by anyone who has them, which is not an access model your legal team will sign off.
Information security gets involved
An enterprise review asks for single sign-on, role-based access, an audit trail, a data-processing agreement, named sub-processors and a certification you can attach to the file. Hosting tools are built for creators, so most of that list is either missing or priced as an exception.
The works council asks how measurement works
Employee listening data is personal data. What you need is a defensible answer on what is measured, at what level of aggregation, who can see it and how long it is kept, agreed before the first episode. Hypecast reports aggregated figures only, with no named-listener tracking, which is the answer a works council is looking for.
More than one business unit wants a show
Two shows are a folder. Fifteen shows across divisions and countries are a governance problem: who publishes, who approves, who sees which numbers, and which audience each episode reaches. That is workspace and permission architecture, not a hosting feature.
What Changes When YouMove To A Platform?
Ten criteria, at category level. Individual hosting products differ, so check each one against its own documentation before you decide.
| Criterion | Typical hosting tool | Hypecast |
|---|---|---|
| Public RSS feed | The default. Episodes are published to a public feed and the open podcast directories. | Not required. A show can run entirely without a public feed. |
| Authenticated listener | Usually a shared secret link or a password, not a named person. | Every listener is an authenticated employee, signed in through your own identity system. |
| SSO / SAML | On the highest tier at some providers, absent at most. | Yes. Single sign-on and SAML are supported. |
| ISO 27001 | Rarely published, and rarely part of the standard contract. | Certified. |
| EU data residency | Storage and delivery region is often unspecified. | All customer data is stored in Germany and processed within the EU. Another location can be selected where a customer requires it. |
| Teams and intranet distribution | An embed code or a link you paste yourself. | Native publishing into Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Viva Engage and employee apps. |
| Listener privacy | Public download stats, no listener identity | Authenticated listeners, aggregated analytics only |
| Multi-business-unit governance | One account, one show list, one set of admins. | Separate workspaces with delegated admin rights, approval stages and an audit trail. |
| Production services | Software only, with agency referrals at best. | Strategy, format development and production available alongside the software. |
| Price model | Monthly self-serve plan per show | Annual licence per organisation, scaled to programme size — see /pricing |
Which One DoesYour Show Need?
Answer these seven questions with your comms, IT and legal colleagues in the room. Two or more clear yes answers put you in platform territory.
- Does the audience consist of employees who have to sign in to listen?
- Will information security ask for SSO, an audit trail and a data-processing agreement?
- Do you have to state where audio and listening data are stored?
- Does the podcast need to reach people inside Teams, the intranet or an employee app?
- Do you have to report reach and listen-through to leadership per audience group?
- Will more than one department or country publish its own show?
- Do you need help with format, hosting and production, not only with software?
If you are already there, the platform overview shows how the pieces fit together, and the internal podcast and corporate podcast guides describe the two formats most companies start with.
Hosting Or Platform:Frequently Asked Questions.
What is the difference between a podcast hosting tool and an enterprise podcast platform?
A hosting tool stores audio and publishes it to a public RSS feed for the open podcast apps. An enterprise podcast platform distributes audio to an authenticated internal audience, inside the tools employees already use, with identity, permissions, governance and reporting built for a company rather than a creator.
Can we run an internal podcast on a normal podcast hosting tool?
For a pilot with a small, non-sensitive show, often yes. It stops working when access has to be tied to employment, when security asks for single sign-on and an audit trail, or when leadership asks who actually listened.
Is a private RSS feed secure enough for employee-only content?
A private feed hides the show from directories, but the link is still a shared secret: anyone who receives it can listen, and access does not end when someone leaves the company. Authenticated access tied to your identity provider is what removes that risk.
Do we still need podcast hosting if we use Microsoft Teams?
Teams distributes and plays audio, but it does not give you an episode feed, publishing workflow, approval stages or listen-through analytics. An internal podcast platform publishes into Teams rather than replacing it.
How does per-employee analytics work without breaching data protection?
By agreeing the level of detail up front. Reporting can stay aggregated by department, location or audience group so no individual is identifiable, and retention is limited. Hypecast reports aggregated figures only, so no individual listening record exists. Bring the works council in before launch, not after.
When is it worth moving from a hosting tool to a platform?
Usually at the point where a second business unit wants a show, where a security review blocks publication, or where you have to prove impact to a leadership team. Migration is straightforward: episodes and audiences move over, and the show keeps running.
